自然史科学特別講義 III (Marine Coastal EcologyI・II)

February 8
Arrival in New Zealand. Arriving Auckland in the evening (19:10) and pick up the rental car at approximately 20:00, then drive to the accommodation.

February 9
Move to Waikato University. Organizing course material and laboratory supplies in at the Tauranga Field Station, Waikato University.

February 10 Tauranga Marine Field Station. Seminar on coastal ecology (Dr. Rebecca Lawton).
Seminar on Hokkaido University (Dr. Kevin Wakeman). Lab and safety introduction and orientation.
Shaun, HU PhD student has heard from Joshua Sargent, Waikato University PhD students about the research conducted at Tauranga Field Station, get a guided tour of the facilities, and how to properly and safely conduct research.

Tauranga aquaculture research facility: This tour was led by Dr. Rebecca Lawton with assistance by Dr. Kevin Wakeman.
Additional support will be given by members of the aquaculture research facility.
Tour of the algal culture facility that shows participants the applications of macroalgal cultivation and biotechnology in New Zealand.

February 12 Field trip to the shorebird centre: https://shorebirds.org.nz/
This outing will be guided by Dr. Kevin Wakeman, with assistance from Dr. Rebecca Lawton. Some additional support will be provided by the shorebird centre staff.

February 13 and 14 Field trip of the local mud flats and mangroves at low tide (Tauranga Field Station)
Groups are visiting macroalgal cultivation and biotechnology in New Zealand. Students gained perspective into future career opportunities that exist in the world.

February 15 Visiting Whakarewarewa: https://whakarewarewa.com/
Learning Mauri culture, the natives of New Zealand people by visiting the area. This is an important aspect of New Zealand, that influences a large amount of goverment policy (even science and academics.) Experiencing a glimpse into most influential cultural aspects.

February 16-17 Research Meeting/Seminar at University of Waikato
HU PhD student Shaun and Waikato U PhD student Joshua had the discussion and presentation regarding the coastal ecology. Siratee and Eric, those who could not join the trip had attended by online.

February 17 Meeting at University of Waikato
Discussion for future research has been conducted. Also, Shaun has consult with Dr. Rebecca for his future research for further collaboration.

February 18 Meeting with University of Waikato Marine Lab faculty in Tauranga for discussion
Field trip of the local mud flats and mangroves at low tide (Tauranga Field Station). In particular, we will be making a survey of the invertebrate and vertebrate communities encountered in these areas: where they live, and how they interact with the environment. Following this, students will form groups and discuss how these mangroves and mud flats form a basis for the local ecology.

February 19 Meeting at Waikato University (Hamilton Campus)
Discussion on future research between HU and Waikato University has been conducted.

February 20 Flights departing Aukland, NZ

February 21 Arrival at Shin-Chitose Airport -> Sapporo
